Okay, you know what day it is: it's #FunFactFriday!!!🥳🎊🤩 Did you know that women need just a bit more sleep than men? Yep, it's true. Women on average need at least an extra 30 minutes to an hour longer sleep duration than men. For some women, it could be a bit longer. Human beings run on a circadian rhythm that syncs our bodies with the sun. And as many of us know, women have a monthly cycles that also comes into play with those rhythms and routines. So, as a woman it's a good rule of thumb to aim for about 8-9 hours of sleep, if you can. Try not to get less than 7 hours of sleep. Remember, sleep is when the body restores and repairs itself. Make sure you're not missing out on the healing that can happen when your sleeping. Our bodies are truly amazing! Take care of yours every day and show it some love. Women's Health is the focus for this week, and it's no wonder why. According to a recent study, almost 58% of women in the US are overweight or obese. The top 3 causes of death for women are 1) heart disease; 2) Cancer; 3) Stroke. Hypertension is found in about 48% of women in the United States. So, about 1 out of 2 women have hypertension. That's an astounding number: 1 in 2! Last week, I highlighted about osteoporosis and how many women over the age of 60 fall into this chronic illness. And for those that have osteoporosis, about 50% will suffer a bone fracture because of it. May is Women's Health Month. I know it's not Friday, and usually I do my fun facts on Fridays, but this is something that I want to throw out there so people realize how much women's health needs to be recognized as an issue. Did you know that women were not included in clinical trials for prescription medications until the early 1990s? 🤯😳 I did a double-take myself when I read that. Women were not generally included in federally funded studies either until the 1980s. So, in essence, women during that time and even today were put on medications that had never really been tested on women to see how their bodies would react to the chemicals in the medication. Make that one make sense. And we saw this come to light even more when drugs that were pulled off the market in the late 1990s for various reasons, and they actually were classified as having a 'greater health risks to women'. And even today, 80% of the preclinical studies are conducted just one male mice. Preclinical studies determine the safety and efficacy of drugs and medications. Needless to say that we need to have a huge expansion into women's health. As women make up 49.6% of the world's population, we need to make sure that we understand how we can improve the health of women. Continuing with Osteoporosis Awareness month: 1 in 3 women over the age of 50 are diagnosed with osteoporosis. That's a lot of women. The numbers for men are the best either. 1 in 5 men are also diagnosed with osteoporosis. These numbers equal about 44 million Americans are living with the disease. Women definitely dominate this space; however, it isn't exclusive to women. A recent study estimated that by 2025 the cost of osteoporosis would be more than $25 billion. Currently, the indirect costs hover around $13.1 billion a year. May is also Osteoporosis Awareness Month. So, what is Osteoporosis? We've all heard the term and know that it affects the bones. What is it exactly? Well, it is a disease in which your bones weaken and increase in risk for breaking. The word itself means "porous bone". Osteoporosis can have a few different causes; however, the most prominent are when women lose estrogen during menopause, and when men decrease in testosterones after andropause. Although, there are some medications that can decrease the absorption of essential minerals that can also affect bone mass and strength. Autoimmune disease can also contribute to it through the poor absorption of minerals due to the chronic illness. About 54 million Americans are diagnosed with Osteoporosis or low bone mass. This is a serious issue, especially since 50% of women and 25% of men with osteoporosis will end up breaking a bone because of their condition. It is responsible for more than $19 billion associated with 2 million broken bones a year. I heard something the other day and when I say this quote, I knew I had to write about it. Fear. It's something we all experience. In some ways our fears really do keep us safe and out of danger. A gut reaction is usually the most accurate. However, the fear I'm talking about is the one where you have a dream in your heart and you allow fear to squelch that it. There is an acronym of FEAR - False Evidence Appearing Real. Think about that for a second. So many times the fear in our mind is nothing more than the thoughts we have about a situation that haven't come to pass yet. But when we have those thoughts, we make that fear, that assumption or scenario real. Our minds are so powerful. They really are. And when you think about how our brains are wired when it comes to fear, it will essentially do everything to keep you safe. But did you know that your heart has its own neurological system. It does. And did you know that your heart has a magnetic field that actually radiates about 3 feet outside of your body? It's true. The strength of that magnetic field is actually 60 times more powerful than even the brain's magnetic field. So, let me ask you this: when it comes to your dreams, which one should you lead with? The mind will always do its best to keep you safe. Even create false evidence that appears to be real. The heart will do its best for you to feel fulfilled and realize your purpose in life. Don't let the fears that roll around in your mind distract you from the dreams you hold within your heart. Go out into the world and live your dreams.
