Event Description: The attack of September 11, 2011 forever changed our world. On a single day, thousands were senselessly killed. The tragic events brought us together and reminded us of the preciousness and responsibilities of freedom. To commemorate the tenth anniversary, our entire community will have an opportunity to come together and remember those who died, honor the bravery of first responders and reaffirm our commitment to what matters most. A Unity Concert will take place on Sunday, September 11, 2011 at 7 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Auditorium in Harrisburg. The September 11th Unity Concert will include inspiring and varied spiritual music. It will touch people of all ages and backgrounds. It will feature the dynamic collaboration of vocalist Neshama Carlebach with Rev. Roger Hambrick and the Green Pastures Baptist Church Choir, an acclaimed group of twenty five superb voices from New York City. This grassroots event, supported by partnering organizations including United Way of the Capital Region, The Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg, The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, JFS of Greater Harrisburg and The Jewish Community Foundation of Central PA, will attract hundreds of people from different faith and ethnic communities in the Greater Harrisburg area. Children and your parents: Join us at 6 p.m. to reflect on 9/11 and create a Peace Wall with Jump Street and The Highmark Caring Place. Remembering 9/11 can be challenging for parents and children, including those who have no memories of that sad day. Jump Street and The Highmark Caring Place will offer a hands-on arts program for children, young people, and their parents to reflect on loss and hope. A freestanding portable Peace Wall will be placed on site before the concert. Children and young people can "tag" the wall using paint markers that will be provided. They will be encouraged to draw images or place words on the wall that reflect their hopes for unity and understanding, preparing us for our commUNITY concert. Later, the images will be captured and uploaded to www.peacewall.net where attendees will be able to see their creations and enjoy the common visual language of the day. Parents will meet separately at first to explore ways to guide children and themselves through this time of remembrance and renewal. Together, we will make a difference. Proceeds of this commemorative concert will benefit local agencies serving women and children, including the YWCA, The Womens Fund (The Foundation for Enhancing Communities), The Women of Vision Fund (The Jewish Community Foundation of Central PA) and The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
